Dear Sailors:

Thank you for your interest in the Historic Ships in Baltimore and for registering for the 2009 USS Constellation Challenge Cup Regatta.  The race and post-race party have been incredible events in past years and we appreciate your support in these challenging times.

This event, in addition to providing an opportunity for some good competitive sailing on the Patapsco and the party on board USS Constellation after the race, is organized to help raise desperately needed funds to support the education and preservation programs at the Historic Ships.  These vessels are important, not only as symbols of our nation’s great naval and maritime past, but also as living classrooms for the thousands of school children who come aboard each year

Awards will be given for placing 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in each respective class.  The USS Constellation Challenge Cup / George Colligan Memorial Trophy, the premier prize for the event, will be awarded for the best combination of both racing time and fundraising.  Even the crew most challenged to get around the race course will still have a chance to win the Cup.

In addition to the ultimate award, there will be prizes for all crews related to their level of fundraising.  Incentives include waiver of entry fees, free tickets to the Restoration Bull Roast, t-shirts for your crew, Historic Ships in Baltimore Family Memberships, tickets to the USS Constellation Turn-around cruise and more.

We are making fundraising easier through an online service called FirstGiving.  You, your crew and your supporters can easily reach out to the people you know to ask them to contribute to your campaign.  Credit will also be given to crews who can bring on corporate partners.  Get started with FirstGiving at http://tinyurl.com/m653nz & corporate partnerships at http://tinyurl.com/mqb3d2

Finally, we hope that everyone will attend the Historic Ships Restoration Bull Roast after the race to celebrate our success.  This event does sell out, so please make your reservations early to insure that you will be able to attend.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Historic Ships USS Constellation Cup Office at 410-539-1797 ext. 402.  Once again, we look forward to seeing you at the start.

Sincerely,

The 2009 USS Constellation Challenge Cup Race Committee

Thank you skippers and crew for making the 5th Annual USS Constellation Cup a record breaking success in spite of the cold, wet weather. You were a tough bunch to turn out. That spirit is what ties us all to the the legacy of the golden age of sail and the USS Constellation.

A big thank you is also in order for Chris Rowsom, Executive Director of Historic Ships Baltimore, who spearheaded the event organization, handled the committee boat, got all the necessary clearances, and played keyboards in the band, Tumblehome. Simply amazing!

Congratulations to his staff and crew for making us all feel welcome, cooking us dinner and running the best post race party, in the world, PERIOD!

Thank you to the BCYA, Bob Sopka, Dylan Stewart and The Race Committee volunteers. Special thanks goes to Principal Officer Bob Greenfield for running an organized, fair and fun race. The participation of the Baltimore Yacht Racing Association this year has made the regatta better than ever and makes sailing in Baltimore better for everyone.

Thank you also goes to the DSC for their unwavering support, with race buoys, participation of boats and general support.

Thank you to our sponsors who provided the food, the wine, the beer, the insurance, the tables and chairs and last, but not least, the rum. Pusser’s and Charles Tobias did a great job with the Grog and Painkillers, raffle prizes and the great hats. Pusser’s is truly a great rum and I encourage all of you to drink it, and please insist that your favorite bars, restaurants and stores stock it. It is good stuff and we owe it to Pusser’s to make it OUR FAVORITE RUM. Thank you for supporting our regatta. Thank you Charles Tobias and Pusser’s Rum!

Thank you, Jack , for the warm and toasty committee boat and playing a great bass in the band.

We hope to make next year even better. This is YOUR race. You can have it any way you want, so, please feel free to email me with ideas, praise, a thank you, a story of remarkable seamanship, general civility, criticisms, complaints or just want to bitch about something. (Please do not abuse this privilege, as it is not a replacement for therapy.)

Best wishes to all of you, see you next year, (or sooner I hope.)
